Bill of Materials (BoM) Structuring for Custom Engineering: Master Batch vs. Job Order BoM
How to architect multi-level indented BoMs that synchronise raw metal purchases, secondary heat treatment sub-contracting, and assembly labor without inventory leaks.

Bill of Materials (BoM) Structuring for Custom Engineering
Unlike mass consumer goods where Bill of Materials structures remain static for months, custom precision engineering plants manufacture unique part numbers for every purchase order.
Without clean indented BoM architecture, shop floors suffer from chronic shortages, forgotten outsourced operations, and unexpected material margin leaks.
The 3-Tier Indented BoM Structure
For custom precision assemblies, structure your BoM into three distinct levels:
- Level 0 (Finished Assembly): The shippable assembly with part serial number, final testing certificate, and packaging crate.
- Level 1 (Sub-Assemblies & Machined Components): Custom manufactured components requiring internal machine spindle time.
- Level 2 (Raw Stock & Hardware Fasteners):
- Specific raw billet stock (dimension in mm with cutoff allowance)
- Standard commercial hardware (dowels, O-rings, helicoils, ISO 4762 socket screws)
- Outsourced chemical finishing (electroless nickel plating, case hardening)
Managing Sub-Contracted Secondary Operations
The most common point of failure in job order tracking is the handoff to external heat treatment or electroplating vendors. Every BoM line for outsourced finishing must include:
- Processing standard (e.g. AMS 2404 for Electroless Nickel)
- Minimum plating thickness in microns
- Required inspection certificate from the sub-vendor before re-entry to your assembly bay.
